About Me
Hi! I’m Dr. Alyssa Burgart - a physician, pediatric anesthesiologist* & bioethicist** in Northern California. This is a picture of me in an operating room - where I take care of the most adorable patients.
*the doctor that keeps kids asleep during surgery (yes, I give drugs to kids, and yes, they say very, very funny things until they are completely anesthetized)
**person who untangles the most challenging health questions facing patients and clinicians
I believe in talking about tough topics without being a jerk.
I’m a national expert in bioethics, gender equity, disability justice, and reproductive justice. I’m all about calling out and smashing the systemic structures that harm everyday people. Above all, I believe in a human dignity approach to my patients, their families, and my co-workers.
I write about whatever I find interesting in medicine and bioethics this week. I’m particularly interested in addressing uncomfortable, complex topics with perspective and humanity. I take pride in explaining the secret world of hospitals so it makes a little more sense. Too many health issues are hidden in hospitals or behind academic publishing paywalls. I’d like to change that.
My work is pretty amazing, and I hope to give you a little peek into my unique perspective.
