Happy Friday, Poppies!
When I imagine the things I enjoy about academia, fabulous university library access is at the absolute top of my list. Just this week, one of our incredible librarians helped me with a massive literature search for a paper I’m working on. I love libraries and the people who work in them.
I’ve been following the recent attacks on library staff and the rise of absolutely bananas book bans. Libraries are critical parts of society and access to information. Librarians are doing really important work and should be able to keep doing it in peace.
So, I’ve fallen down the LibrarianTikTok rabbit hole, and I hope never to climb out.
Here are some of my favorite TikTok’s from library staff.
I’m really loving the Milwaukee Public Library account - here are two of their videos:
“Seasoned Librarian when they overhear a complex reference question”
The Princess Bride - As You Wish Scene, but in a Library
Cincy Librarian showing off “How we gather hold requests at the Library”
“What I thought working in a library would be like”
(Highly recommend having sound on 🔈)
For those into femme-librarian fashion, I give you “Radical Librarian Workfits”
Libraries - but make it Wes Anderson
There are tons of these Wes Anderson-style videos from library staff. I’ll spare you and only send two.
Wes Anderson and you follow a book through a return machine!
Librarians: “Cuz we’re not the sleep police”
For those of us who can’t leave the library without a lot of books
Hope you enjoyed these little videos!
Here are opportunities to support your local libraries and fight book bans and censorship. Next week, make sure to tell a librarian how much you appreciate them!
If you have anyone in your life that you think would enjoy Poppies & Propofol, please send them a link.
Be well, be bold, be brave,
